pompeii

Of all the extraordinary archaeological sites that Italy has to offer, the ruins of Pompeii stand out to me because they show the incredible power of volcanic eruptions over the human civilisation. The ashes from the volcanic eruption literally buried the residents of Pompeii alive and they preserved the ruins of the city for hundreds of years. Even more importantly, the ruins of this city lead me think to think of the fragility of human life in face of natural calamities, and consequently, to be grateful to scientific advancements that now enable us to anticipate so many volcanic eruptions and other natural calamities and minimise the loss of life.
